Ahoy there light bulb buddies!

This is the first post in my all new light bulb blog that will illuminate the world of light bulbs, so to speak. Herein you will find all manner of light bulb ramblings and rantings. To start off, let me say that the light bulb's ubiquity in the modern age is incredible, and when you think about it, nearly all people in the modern world make use of light bulbs in order that they may go about their daily lives in a comfortably bright fashion. Most people aren't really aware of just how many different types of bulbs there are out there. There are a huge multitude of different glass shapes, base types, filament formations, color temperatures, wattages, voltages, beam angles, beam spreads, longevities, CRIs, etc. As time has gone by, there has been a need for an ever-increasing number of different types of light bulbs to satisfy very specific applications. If you take a look at a thorough light bulb website you will see that there are thousands of different permutations of the light bulb.

To many people light bulbs are an extraordinarily mundane object that is taken for granted, but when you start to think of just how incredibly useful and necessary they are in the industrial age, you may begin to appreciate their impact on our lives.

There are many exciting new technologies that are being employed in the design and manufacture of light bulbs that will make them ever more efficient without sacrificing output. Most people know about compact fluorescents, but LED light bulbs are actually becoming far stronger and could be the next big thing in efficient lighting. These bulbs were crude at first and while their power draw was minimal (often only a couple of watts) their output was weak and those that were bright had a tendency to overheat if left on for long periods of time. With advances in the technology, they are becoming a much more viable lighting solution. Many people have been introduced to LED lighting technology via LED flashlights.

I have one of the aforementioned flashlights and am amazed at just how long it lasts on a single set of batteries. The name of the game with efficiency is turning the greatest number of watts into lumens rather than heat, and LEDs do that extremely well.
